“Compress without losing quality” sounds attractive, but it combines two different ideas. Lossless compression preserves the underlying information; lossy compression removes information to achieve larger savings. Photos, videos, audio, and image-heavy PDFs are often already compressed, so substantial reductions normally require a quality trade-off.
Lossless and lossy are not the same
Lossless tools can reduce some PNG images, documents, or raw data without changing the decoded result, but the available saving may be small. JPEG, MP4, MOV, MP3, and many PDFs already contain compressed media. Re-encoding them at a lower bitrate, resolution, or quality level is lossy even when the difference is hard to notice on one screen.
A claim that every file can become dramatically smaller with no quality loss is not credible. The source file, encoder, settings, and intended use determine the outcome.
Choose settings by intended use
Do not judge only by file size. Open the output in a normal viewer, seek through video and audio, zoom into detailed images, and verify the features you rely on.
- Archive, legal evidence, print masters, and editing source files: preserve the original.
- Everyday viewing and sharing: moderate image quality or video bitrate may be acceptable after review.
- Scanned PDFs: test small text, diagrams, OCR, links, forms, and signatures.
- Speech recordings: lower bitrates can work; music and production audio need more care.
What Compress.My does—and does not promise
Compress.My uses lossy processing for supported media and PDFs. It validates the produced artifact and only replaces a Drive file when the result is readable and smaller. That protects against publishing an empty, malformed, or larger result; it cannot guarantee that every subjective visual or audio difference will be imperceptible.
Files that are unsupported, inaccessible, already efficient, or fail validation are skipped. A metadata candidate estimate is not a promise of final savings. A paid plan is a one-time processing allowance, not additional cloud storage or a savings guarantee.
The safest workflow
Back up irreplaceable originals, start with a small sample, inspect the results, then decide whether the same trade-off is appropriate for the rest of the collection. If exact preservation matters more than storage cost, keep the original and consider upgrading storage instead of recompressing it.
